Conservation Planning for the Marine Environment

An introduction to tools and techniques

Important

While some software tools for conservation planning (e.g. Marxan or Zonation) do not require coding skills beyond GIS skills for input data preparation, prioritizr, the tool that we will be using today, is written in R and therefore requires a basic understanding of the R programming language. This allows for fast and reproducible workflows by exploiting the advantages of the programming language.

Therefore, we need to install R, RStudio, and some other requirements for using prioritizr.

Please follow the software installation instructions in Appendix 1 before you attend the workshop.

Overview

Welcome to the Conservation Planning for the Marine Environment Workshop at IMCC7. This document will run through all the material (and more!) that we will cover in the workshop. The workshop will teach you the core principles of systematic conservation planning (SCP), providing the basic hands-on skills for various widely used decision-support tools to start applying conservation planning to your work.
